Preface

At Wuchang a century ago, the insurgent gunshots of soldiers from Hubei New Army declared a new chapter of Chinese history. Along with the gunshots of Wuchang Uprising, the Qing emperor abdicated the throne, the Republic of China was established, and the goal of republic was accomplished. The rule of imperial power that had lasted for thousands of years in China was toppled in the republic waves throughout the nation. Decades before, innumerable people with lofty ideals run about and appealed; countless revolutionaries dedicated their lives. Finally the republican flower was bloomed because of their sweat and blood, so that China embarked on the path to independence, power and republic, and the constitutional government, civilians were allowed to enjoy rights of freedom, democracy, and equality. Looking back on the modern history lasting for hundreds of years, we find that Chinese people’s road forward has no turnback although obstructed with endless hazards and hardships.
2011 is the centenary of Xinhai Revolution. On the occasion of Xinhai Revolution centenary, initiated by Beijing World Art Museum in cooperation with various parties, and after being elaborately planned for over one year, the “Road to the Loftiest Ideal-Image Exhibition Commemorating the Centenary of Xinhai Revolution” exhibition of 120 pictures that are meticulously selected from hundreds of precious history pictures collected from all over the world, is held successively in ten art galleries and museums of Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Lanzhou, Zhengzhou, Nanchang, Guiyang, Xiamen, Dongguan, and Hong Kong so as to commemorate the revolution that happened a century ago. With an effort to inspire the national spirit and encourage the patriotic enthusiasm, we keep the history in mind and look forward to the future.
