                                                                                                          Preface
The constant progress and change occurred in the times are an inevitable reality that we must face.
In the middle and late 1980s, new thought trends in art began to upsurge. Hubei at that time led the national fashion and the theoretical journal - Ideological Trend in Fine Arts, under the effort of numerous art historians, had become a platform for active academic exchange and information distribution. A large batch of young artists from across the country assembled at Wuhan. Under the mutual communication and influence, they formed Hubei artists group known in the Chinese contemporary art history. Although in the course of time a lot of them gradually left Hubei, having been a “transfer” place for China, the unique temperament of Hubei still attracts the artists already left and the ones chosen to stay.
Since the new century, the emergence of art institutes like art galleries, and the various large academic activities and exhibitions held, has showed that the art atmosphere of Hubei is becoming alive again. Today, when we try to comb the art status of Hubei in the recent decade, the eight artists that have witnessed the art status and are still active in today’s art circle come into our vision and become the subject of our narration. They are Fang Shaohua, Shi Lei, Li Bangyao, Xiao Feng, Yang Guoxin, Yuan Xiaofang, Fu Zhongwang, and Wei Guangqing respectively.
A decade ago, they debuted in the art field; today some of them still insist on their original theme, some turned their wheel. Some remained in Hubei regardless how the trend goes, some left yet was drawn back now and then. From ambitious youth to middle age, they have reflected upon life and time has sublimed them. For those eight artists, the decade since the new century is like a transfer in their life and art career. Through their works, we can see clearly their diversified and multiplized reflections on the art development trend in these ten years.
Based on this, Hubei Museum of Art has planned “Transfer – 2011 Art Exhibition in No. 1 Sanguandian”. The creation of academic brand “No. 1 Sanguandian” is a thing worthy of mention. “No. 1 Sanguandian” is a name full of traditional culture color and regional feature. The act of naming an academic brand after a place name shows that Hubei Museum of Art is trying to break through region limits while keeping Hubei as its base, displaying its courage in innovating cultural vision and its cultural confidence as well as self awareness. “Transfer – 2011 Art Exhibition in No. 1 Sanguandian” is the debut exhibition responding to this academic brand.
In the times featured of progress and change, “Transfer” enables us to make a pause and reflect upon our position and steering direction. The “No. 1 Sanguandian” exhibition will be held once every two years; we believe that more academic issues worthy of concern and research will be dug out through it.
